I purchased this cage as a substitute for a FN-style cage, which I couldn't really afford. I thought this cage would tide us over while I saved for the "dream cage". A friend had purchased it as well, and after seeing hers I thought this would be great for awhile. Hers arrived damaged in shipping. The tray was bent and the paint was flaked off (and, after 2 months, has begun to rust there). I decided to purchase the cage from PETCO direct, thereby avoiding shipping issues. It cost slightly more in-store, but was still less than online plus shipping.
The cage is advertised as being powder-coated, and it's not. Powder-coated wire is kind of textured and resistant to chipping. The wires on this cage are spray-coated with some kind of vinyl-ish paint. It chips and comes off in big flakes. After 3 weeks, I already have rust spots where the cage sits in the pan and rubs against the hooks that attach it there. The paint on the door latches flaked off after about 10 days. Assembly was a pain. I did read the directions and can usually figure these things out, but the shelf hooks get caught on the wrong wires and once you get that side free the other side is caught on another bar, and... grrrr. The wire cage is flimsy enough to have bent somewhat, and the shelves are rubbish. They were actually bent when I got them (like in corners, etc.) and are only going to get worse. I don't really like the mesh shelves, either. I end up covering them with fabric held in place by big binder clips from the office supply store, because I worry about bumblefoot. And since they are so flimsy, I have to check for wires that have come unwelded (and might stick into one of the rats' feet) and bend it down or nip it off. Cleaning and reassembly take forever. Every time I clean the cage (4 days), I put the shelves and ramps back in a new configuration to keep thing interesting for my 3 boys. The whole time I am wiggling and jiggling the shelves into place and muttering "I hate this ****ing cage, stupid piece of crap, I hate your stinking guts, I should set you on fire..." in a sing-song voice, maybe to the tune of "You Are Not Alone". I have to make it into a song, or I would seriously pick the cage up and throw it out the window. Every... 4... days. That's a lot of frustration.
Ultimately, I would never purchase this cage again. If it were difficult to clean and reassemble, but was built to last, I would suck it up. Unfortunately, the Rat Manor is cheaply constructed and flimsy (and possibly dangerous, with the shelf mesh coming undone and poking up), and was just a total waste of money. I'll have to replace it soon, and am going to take it as an expensive lesson.
