Long before the wreck of the Captain Lincoln in 1852 brought settlers to the North Spit, Native Americans and foreign explorers, including Sir Francis Drake, navigated the inland waterways and Pacific shorelineof what would become Coos County. The deep draft channel, timberfilled landscape, prime location--between San Francisco and PugetSound--and the discovery of gold made the region ripe for commercialsuccess, and scores of pioneers migrated to the Coos Bay area. Shipyards and sawmills sprang up. Logging became a major industry. Gold and coal were mined. And settlements and farmsteads appeared almost overnight. For many pioneers, Coos County was truly paradise, a land of opportunity rich in natural resources where they optimistically forged new lives with sacrifice and backbreaking labor. Their perseverance and rugged individualism distinguish the region to this day.

Writing the Great War: Sir James Edmonds and the Official Histories, 1915-1948 (Military History and Policy) Review

Writing the Great War: Sir James Edmonds and the Official Histories, 1915-1948 (Military History and Policy)
Average Reviews:

Despite the author's prodigious efforts in trying to prove that the Official Histories are not partial accounts written to protect the reputations of the politicians and the High Command and cover up the gross incompetence of Britain's war efforts and its military, the fact that the Histories are paid for by the Treasury and the War/Colonial/Foreign Offices, written by Sir James who was on the staff of Haig in France, that all the findings must be vetted by the said Offices and the Cabinet's Subcommittee of Control (!) and that the chief aim is to serve as an antidode to all the unofficial histories which attribute the failures to the Government's ineptitude and incompetence, would make one suspicious of whatever that's put into print.
And the choice of Sir James as head of the Historical Section, whose remit was "to find the facts and make as little criticism as possible" was dubious to say the least.
A lifer in the Army, Edmonds was neither trained in historical research (he never attended college) nor professionally qualified
(despite his more than 6 decades in the Army, he managed to spend a total of 14 days at the front during the Great War) to write on the series. As a mental case (he broke down after just 14 days in the front, withour firing a shot or being fired on) and a desk bound, incompetent, intriguing staff officer, well protected by fellow Staff College graduates like Haig, who spent 4 peaceful, luxurious chateau years in the GHQ in France bathing in the sea and picking wild flowers, one understands why he was chosen to head up the effort, which was mainly to cover up the unthinking stupidity and gross incompetence of British generalship in general, Haig his boss in particular.
In defending Edmonds' monumental rubbish (Liddell Hart called the series, Official, but not History), Andrew Green, coming from a long line of revisionist historians like Warner, Terraine, Sheffield, manages to do the opposite - exposing the British Army for what it was, and is today, donkeys led by asses.

Begun within months of the war's outbreak, and not completed for a further 33 years, the writing of the Official Histories of World War I was a venture of unprecedented scale and complexity.Who, then, was responsible for producing such an enterprise? Did it aim to inform or did it have darker political motivations? Did the authors, who alone had access to records that were to remain classified for decades to come, seek to lay the facts and lessons of the war truthfully before the public? A number of critics have claimed that, on the contrary, the Official Histories were highly partial accounts written to protect reputations and cover up the true scale of British military incompetence.Andrew Green directly challenges these views, examining the progress by which official history was written, the motives and influences of its paymasters, and the literary integrity of its historians. The book focuses on four offical volumes covering arguably the most contentious battles of the war: Gallipoli, the Somme, Third Ypres (Passchendaele) and March 1918. What emerges from this is both a story of these great campaigns and an insight into the political intrigues and conflicting constraints that influenced the official writing of the Great War.

Scenic Driving New England Review

Scenic Driving New England
Average Reviews:

In 320 pages and 28 scenic drives Stewart Green leaves no stone (or should I say rock) unturned in describing each drive.
With this book, you'll not only get directions from one town to another along the route but everything that's in-between, and a fair dose of area history and stories. Stewart takes his role seriously in being your guide, and not just a "tour driver" regurgitating memorized facts.
I'm very familiar with many of the drives he describes and confess to discovering places and information even new to me.
This isn't a book to read cover to cover in one sitting. It's too dense, and the drives are much too varied as well. My suggestion is to have an idea where you'll visit and then read those scenic drives related to those areas. It'll provide insights and planning material for your trip as well.
The smaller format of the book begs for it to be taken on each trip with you. Many of the pages in my copy quickly became "dog-eared" and full of sticky notes.
I was a little disappointed with many of the pictures in my paperback edition. I found myself staring at photos of non-descript riverbeds with rocks. I'm sure in full color and glossy format they looked great, but in black and white on non-glossy paper many looked flat and over-indulgent.
But I didn't purchase the book for the photography.
If you're looking for a New England scenic drive book with all the directions and details to make sure you don't miss a thing along the way, then look no further than this book.

Mobile: A Novel (French Literature Series) Review

Mobile: A Novel (French Literature Series)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I couldn't help but notice that there were no reviews, not even professional ones, of this book, and it's too good not to have some description available here. I first read Mobile in the sixties, in French, and in spite of a failing memory for the language, re-read it recently. (I'm ordering this translation, too, curious to see how it reads in English) Written in the era of Rauschenberg and Pop collage, the book is a pastiche, alternating between short, dry notes seemingly made as the writer travels across America, and excerpts, sometimes fascinating, sometimes damning, always revealing, from our own documents. Audubon's diaries, Sears catalogs, treaties with Indian tribes, billboards, all kinds of quotations are included to create a portrait of the country. Butor seems to be arguing that only thereby can a likeness be created that is true to our nature. Mo-BEEL, or mobile: fragmentary, disjointed, contradictory, hypnotic, always on the move.
This wry inventory, although (as is true of all books that quote pop culture) somewhat dated, deserves to be more widely known here. We Americans are notoriously self-involved; ever since deToqueville we have been fascinated not only with questions of our own identity but the way foreigners see us, and Butor fulfills that promise with a fascinating interpretation, not sociology but art. His entries definitely stack the deck--the 60s counterculture flourished in France as well as the U.S., after all-- but this is no easy hatchet job. The author seems as fascinated by American excesses, lapses and foibles as he is judgmental. Forget Baudrillard: this is much more engaging.

The Chesapeake and Ohio Railway (VA) (Images of Rail) Review

The Chesapeake and Ohio Railway (VA) (Images of Rail)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When you think of the C&O you tend to think of three things: long coal trains being pulled by those massive Allegheny 2-6-6-6 steam engines, the effort they put into their high class passenger service, and of course the sleeping kitty 'Chessie.' And in this book, each of these gets a full chapter.
As the book is composed almost entirely of pictures, here are images of a rail system that now is long gone. Even the C&O itself dissappeared into the massive CSX system almost twenty years ago. That was just after the author started researching the C&O. And in this book he is sharing his collection of C&O materials with the rest of us. Here are pictures of a wide range of C&O steam power, unfortunately most of which now exist only in the form of pictures with the original engines shipped to the scrap yard. Here is a picture of the experimental coal-burning, steam-turbine-electric locomotive that they tried (coal was cheap, diesel was not).
All in all, this book is a great tribute to the C&O during its glory years.

In the late 1860s, the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway (C&O) pushed its first tracks westward from Virginia's Tidewater region across the mountains into what was then the new state of West Virginia. Ultimately its tracks stretched across a half-dozen states and even into Canada. Appalachian coal was the C&O's primary cargo, but its fast freights carried shipments of all kinds, and its crack passenger trains were marvels of their day. In 1963, the C&O merged with the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad in the first of what would become a wave of railroad mergers. Today the old C&O is part of giant CSX Transportation. Images of Rail: The Chesapeake and Ohio Railway gathers 200 photographs that chronicle the C&O story. Here is a fond look back at its mammoth steam locomotives and the diesels that replaced them, its bustling passenger stations, and much more, including the legendary John Henry, who beat that steam drill, and Chessie, the sleeping kitten that was the C&O's much-loved trademark.

Situated along the Pacific Coast Highway, Seal Beach is the coastal portal between Los Angeles and Orange Counties. This vacation spot and largely residential community separates the City of Long Beach from the broad, open, southerly beaches of the OC Sunset, Bolsa Chica, Huntington, Newport, Laguna, and beyond. The regional fame of Anaheim Landing and Anaheim Bay preceded the founding of Bay City, which became Seal Beach after too much mail intended for Bay City found its way to the City by the Bay, San Francisco. In the early 20th century, the popular Joy Zone was a huge beachside amusement park in Seal Beach enjoyed by thousands of vacationers brought south by the Pacific Electric Red Car Line. This entertaining retrospective documents these landmarks, as well as local residents, events, Seal Beach Pier, the nearby U.S. Naval Weapons Station, and other points of interest.

Mingus: A Critical Biography (Da Capo Paperback) Review

Mingus: A Critical Biography (Da Capo Paperback)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a slightly disappointing, but still very good biography of one of the greatest jazz composers and probably its top bassist. Mingus, using a mixture of jazz, blues, church music, European impressionism and march music, and folk, wrote some of the most outstanding music of the 20th century. A man of wide-ranging, complicated emotions, lionesque appetites, and varied intellectual and creative pursuits, this titan of modern music is a fascinating biographical subject.
However, Brian Priestley does not capture the full measure of the man and his music. I'm not sure what the subtitle "A Critical Biography" is meant to convey, but there is not enough musical criticism. Particularly in the second half of the book, Priestley resorts to an "and then he wrote" approach, painstakingly detailing every new composition or derivative, and every new musician in the ever-changing Mingus ensemble. There is musical analysis, but often it is more technical than critical. Referring to a song on "East Coasting" Priestley writes, "it incorporates passages of G minor twelve-bar blues only slightly different from the opening of `Eulogy' (Im/bVImaj\bII7\V7 instead of Im|bVImaj7\IIm7b5\v7)." The first part of this sentence is the more revealing: "It is a tribute to Mingus' maturing methodology that ideas are shown to be capable of repetition and rearrangement."
This does not go far enough, though. Why did Mingus "cross-breed" so many of his works, as Priestley notes but never really examines. The reasons (aesthetic, psychological--practical in the case of "Slop") for the similarities among some works (e.g., "Better Get Hit Into Yo Soul", "Wednesday Night Prayer Meeting", "Slop," and other compositions is never really explored. Were Mingus' edits across versions and his reworking of similar themes an attempt to forge a new "traditional" folk music within a mere two decades? (Perhaps this hypothesis is off, but I would have preferred that Priestley write a more encompassing analysis of both the whole of Mingus' work and its constituent parts.)
Conversely, we may praise the author for not indulging in psycho-biography, for including extensive well-documented quotes from Mingus as well as other musicians, and for describing enough on-stage Mingus behavior to get a sense of his personality. One might want to read the excellent though brief "Mingus/Mingus: Two Memoirs" for a better look at the offstage Mingus and his relationships with non-musicians.
The strength of the book is the extensive documentation of the entire Mingus discography, the ever shifting lineups, and both the recorded and non-recorded performances. This must have been a labor of love, as Priestley gives the definitive record of Mingus' output and how the performances map onto the different albums. The appendices include musical notations of ten (!) bass excerpts, a second-by-second structural analysis of "The Black Saint...,"and notes to all citations in the book. This is invaluable for the Mingus fan.
Priestley's writing can be awkward, "She it was who wrote....," and strained "Any minimally serious astrological guide will describe the typical Taurean as having outsized physical appetites; what is perhaps even more relevant to Mingus is the ability to treat extramarital affairs (like the ice-cream [sic] of which he was so fond) as a dessert complementing, but in no way threatening, any long-established relationship."
Despite the reservations noted above, I can recommend this book as a comprehensive resource for Mingus fans. It also includes enough personal information and sympathy (through interview excerpts with Mingus and others) that one begins to appreciate his complexities. There are a few clues to his Joycean autobiography, "Beneath the Underdog," and one gets a good sense of the racial tensions and injustices battled by Mingus. Finally, judging from the reviews of the other major Mingus biography, "Myself When I Am Real," this is the best book currently available. It will be enhanced, however, if read with the aforementioned autobiography (as perplexing as it is) and "Mingus/Mingus," as well as the brief but excellent critiques in "The Penguin Guide to Jazz." Includes 25 black and white photos, notes, appendices, and an extensive index.

Click Here to see more reviews about: Mingus: A Critical Biography (Da Capo Paperback)

It would be no exaggeration to call Charles Mingus the greatest bass player in the history of jazz; indeed, some might even regard it as understatement, for the hurricane power of his work as a composer, teacher, band leader, and iconoclast reached far beyond jazz while remaining true to its heritage in the music of Duke Ellington, Charlie Parker, and Thelonious Monk. In this new biography Brian Priestley has written a masterly study of Mingus's dynamic career from the early years in Swing, to the escapades of the Bebop era, through his musical maturity in the '50s when he directed a band that redefined collective improvisation in jazz. Woven in with exacting assessments of Mingus's artistic legacy is the story of his volatile, unpredictable, sometimes dangerous personality. The book views Mingus as a black artist increasingly politicized by his situation, but also unreliable as a witness to his own persecution. Capturing him in all his furious contradictions-passionate, cool, revolutionary but with a keen sense of tradition-Brian Priestley has produced what can be called, again without exaggeration, the best biography of a jazz musician we have ever seen.

Balfour and the Shadow Pirate Review

There are two ultimate tests for a good read: first, does the reader not want the book to end, and second,
does the reader envy the author's writing ability. This book passes the test on both. I'm familiar with history and ships. I served both in the U.S. Coast Guard and the U.S. Merchant Marine as well as worked on fishing boats. I loved the story and found it to be both historically and technically accurate. I have sailed most of the coast that the author describes and it is geographically accurate. I initially thought it was a historical novel, then, perhaps, a romance, but it turned into a fine sea story.I have already recommended it to friends and look forward to the next book.

The Solent Cruising Companion: A Yachtsman's Pilot and Cruising Guide to Ports and Harbours from Keyhaven to Chichester (Wiley Nautical) Review

The Solent Cruising Companion: A Yachtsman's Pilot and Cruising Guide to Ports and Harbours from Keyhaven to Chichester (Wiley Nautical)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I read some years ago that between Brighton and Bournemouth (about ninety-fives miles apart) on the south coast of England there are the largest number of registered leisure craft in the world. I doubt that has changed and in the center of this area is the Solent. If you fancy sailing around the ports and harbors you'll really find this book very useful.
The Solent is about twenty-eight miles east to west with twelve harbors and estuaries, protected from weather extremes by the Isle of Wight. The only real hazards are the commercial vessels, from huge tankers, world class cruise liners (that have Southampton as their home port) to ferries and hydrofoils. But away from this commercial activity you can sail up estuaries towards that pub drink and a meal. The nice thing about the book, I thought, is the information about each place, not just of a marine nature but bits of historical detail and where to go and what to see once you step ashore.
The five chapters cover it all: Western, Central and Eastern, Solent history and the all important Racing the Solent. Color photos throughout for each location and beautifully designed colored charts (the book stresses that these are not to be used for navigation) and a really clever idea was to include several aerial shots which give a sort of three-dimensional look to the charts. There is the odd omission of some places: neither Ashlett Creek or Hill Head Harbor are included. Admittedly these are really small anchorages with no facilities but they are included on Admiralty chart 2022. The back of the book has several pages of technical information: tidal streams, waypoints, racing charts, weather, communication frequencies and an index.
I think the book looks so nice that even if you can't use it for sailing the Solent it will make an ideal title for the armchair traveler.

Steve Roberts has built on the earlier work of Jack Bauer to put together one of the most accurate lists published of ships of the U.S. Navy. Meticulously researched through primary Navy records, the book corrects dozens of earlier errors of names, dates and details and provides comments on nearly every type of combatant vessel built for the USN. This is NOT a coffee-table book full of pretty pictures; rather, it is stuffed with details that are quite useful for anyone needing reliable information.

I first saw this book while having dinner on a friends boat. I liked it so much, especially since I used to sail on a Herreshoff boat when I was a kid, that I got my own copy. Its really well written, and the Herreshoff family is pretty amazing. Nat isn't ever going to make Father of the Year, but he really designed some great boats. His son Francis somehow survived his father and made his own great boats. This is a beautiful book, with lots of amazing photographs, and a great story too. I never knew about all the power boats that the Herreshoffs designed, or all the boats for the navy. I think even people who just want an interesting book to read with beautiful photographs would like this book.

This is the third book I have by the same authors. As with the previous 2 it follows the same formulae. A brief introduction of the marque, and then a model by model discription. If it's not in this book, then it's probable that Aston Martin never made it. The color pictures are superb and show off the cars perfectly. The photos of the DB4 Zagato are amazing and really show this car in all it's glory. Every car maker has one model that best exemplifies the marque, and the Zagato is it.
The background on the cars is printed in 3 languages, so it's not as detailed as you might think.
Overall, this is a great reference book and a must for any car lover.
