Gilbert de Motier de Lafayette, in honor of whom our National Guard is named, was truly the first knight of America, pure-hearted, and altruistic. This book chronicles the beloved "adopted" son of George Washington, who at 19 barely escaped arrest by King Louis XVI to come to fight for our cause. He was the key link in securing French aid that made the critical difference in our victory at Yorktown. Read how Washington had implicit trust in his talents as a great general charging him with cornering Lord Cornwallis in the southern campaign of the Rev War, with the future of our country at stake. The book clearly states Lafayette's role. A friend of Alexander Hamilton, Lafayette gave his fortune, his valor and his heart to the cause of our freedom not as a Frenchman, but as an American General. Read how he commanded with love and the example of his own leadership. Allow me to further enhance the value of Lafayette to our American heritage that the book omits, but is well detailed in Harlow Giles Unger's "Lafayette", which I recommend as a companion book. (Available on Amazon.com) Unger brings to live endearing stories that illuminate the personality of Lafayette and his value to America. While this book gives other specific accounts not detailed by Unger, especially the political dynamics of the time, Unger provides other details not covered in the writing style of Tower, typical of his time.( Eg.Upon Lafayette's visit to America in 1824, thousands of people thronged the streets to see him. Arches were built in the then 24 states and banquets were given in his honor; his picture was printed on everything from dishes, ladies gloves, arm bands and money. Upon his death America mourned him more than Washington, for more than a month officially. John Quincy Adams gave a 3-hour eulogy to a black-draped Congress, comparing Lafayette's pure heart to being a little below the angels.) Childhood heroics and teen-age antics and disdain for the frivalty of the French courts add to Lafayette's charm in Unger's book, as well as his military savvy and ingenuity, but again, this was not the style of wrting in Towers'day, yet Tower gives other insightful accounts and is held to be a valuable author. I most highly recommend this book for the serious reader, as well as the reader looking for an over-all view of Lafayette's time in America(not going back to Lafayette's formative years in France.) I have many books on Lafayette, and consider this a very valuable asset.
Lafayette's importance in our history and therefore why this book is beneficial,is reflected in the fact that the ship on which Lafayette returned to America with French aid, the Hermione,is being reconstructed in France and is scheduled to sail to America in 2012. Ask yourself why over 600 America schools, organizations, cities, streets, counties etc. in America are named for Lafayette.(Eg. Lafayette College, The American Friends of Lafayette, the Massachusetts Lafayette Society.) This book will illuminate the fact that the name of Lafayette should be near and dear to our hearts and lips as is the name of George Washington, whose reputed stoic heart was won over by the endearing Lafayette. Together with Unger's book you will feel great American pride in claiming Lafayette as a founding father and an American treasure.

Windmills of New England: Their Genius, Madness, History & Future Review

Windmills of New England: Their Genius, Madness, History and Future

Dan Lombardo's "Windmills of New England: Their Genius, Madness, History & Future" is written in a very scholarly manner, yet it is obviously a labor of love and as a result he has created a fun and interesting read. This book has something for everyone. Not only is it full of history and wonderful historical photographs for the history buff, but there are literary elements here as well. Mr. Lombardo has collected a compendium of windmill sayings for the reader to discover the origins of "Daily Grind", "Rule of Thumb" and many more. I also enjoyed the easy-to-understand explanations of how windmills and wind turbines work, along with the glossary of windmill terms. He really makes the history come alive and presents wind power in a historical context.
This beautiful, oversized cloth book makes a wonderful read. I'm excited for warmer weather, so I can try the driving tours that are provided at the end of the book for Cape Cod, Massachusetts and Rhode Island.

With an almost quixotic dedication to his subject, Dan Lombardo has scoured countrysides, seasides and archives in a quest to comprehend the fascinating history and exciting future of the windmills of New England. Combining a fun approach with scholarly rigor, he examines the many ways windmills revolutionized the lives of our ancestors, just as modern wind power is now poised to change local and perhapseven world politics. Indeed, with wind farms now producing electricity at prices that are highly competitive with all other sources - and generating "electrical" controversies in the local and national news - this book could not be any more timely.Lombardo takes his readers along with him on a journey to the antique remains of wooden windmills to meet the people who care for and treasure them. He introduces us to young apprentices learning to grind corn, artists using windmills as studios, and even an engineer who single-handedly operates a major modern electric wind farm.Lombardo explores the powerful poetic and literary uses of windmills, their imagery in film, their impact on language, and their place in popular culture, such as in residential and commercial architecture, as lawn ornaments, and as perennial obstacles on mini-golf courses. Along the way, he has collected more than 160 photographs, vintage postcards and other renderings. This invaluable volume is complete with online and other resources, a useful index, and a series of windmill tours to assist readers with their own windmill adventures.

This book has helped me immensely in improving my firefighter interview skills. I went from not passing interviews to being hired as a firefighter. The important thing that Chief Lepore does in this book is help people understand the logic and thought processes behind answering interview questions. Anyone can memorize a textbook answer, but once you understand the logic behind it you are then able to dynamically answer any question thrown your way and it will be an answer that is from the heart. Fodor's New England, 27th Edition (Fodor's Gold Guides) Review

Fodor's New England, 27th Edition (Fodor's Gold Guides)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Fodor's "New England" travel guide is an excellent introduction to a diverse region offering historical attractions, great scenary, and multiple recreational opportunities. All too many folks know no more of the Northeast than can seen from the I-95 corridor. In fact, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine have hundreds of years of history and a vibrant present to show visitors.
Fodor's surveys each state, covering the major regions, noting scenic routes, sites of tourist interest, recreational opportunities, and suggestions for accomodations and dining. Skiing in Vermont, hiking in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, historical Old Boston, and the beautiful coastlines of Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Maine get their due emphasis. Fodor's provides a variety of maps, including diagrams of the downtown areas of some of the major cities and a detachable driving map. Insets highlight items of local history or interest. Commentary on travel to and within New England, along with brief weather and safery considerations, is included.
Fodor's eschews pictures in favor of more data; those looking for photographs for a sense of scale must look elsewhere. Inevitably, a survey-level guide for a large area must skim the surface; readers needing more information about a particular area or location can consult the listed web-sites or refer to other publications.
This book is highly recommended to tourists planning their first vacation the New England region.

Mean Spirits Review

Mean Spirits
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For most Americans, the Mayflower and its Pilgrims exemplify the beginning of the great American Dream. Victims of social and religious persecution, they were among the notable first to come to the New World and prosper from all it had to offer. In his novel "Mean Spirits", author Roger Chiocchi presents an opposite view. He introduces us to Charles Pennfield, a Pilgrim for whom the Mayflower was the beginning of an American nightmare; a nightmare that would span four centuries and plague multiple generations of the Pennfield family.
Set in New York City and New England during the mid 1990s, "Mean Spirits" focuses on the lives of two modern Pennfields: Jonathan and Christopher. Jonathan is the chief executive of an airline company in New York City and Christopher is a university professor in a quiet New England town. Both brothers begin to experience an increasing frequency of inexplicable hauntings and supernatural events. As the severity of these hauntings intensify, they are brought together in a quest to understand why this is happening to them.
From the beginning, the two brothers' personalities are in stark contrast of one another. Jonathan is growing unhappy with his life of privilege and is beginning to discover that his priorities are not set on what is truly important in this world. He is disinterested in maintaining his family ties and sees them as a burden to his freedom.
Christopher Pennfield, however, is quickly recognized as a preservationist of the Pennfield family name. He possesses a great pride in his family lineage that fuels his arrogance and sense of superiority. He regards the Pennfields as a virtuous clan and is committed to making the world aware of their accomplishments and contributions.
To aid in their search for answers, the brothers enlist the help of a New Jersey ghost hunter by the name of Ed Swann. Swann, a retired contractor, is interested in the scientific explanation and legitimization of hauntings and ghostly encounters. Through his scientific approach he begins to meticulously uncover the secrets behind the Pennfield's supernatural burden.
During his investigation, Swann also discovers that he has a weak psychic connection with a passed member of the Pennfield family. This spirit is an interesting addition to his search and proves to be helpful in uncovering important information that otherwise would have been overlooked.
Throughout the course of the story, the contradiction of ideologies between the two brothers creates an ongoing tension and rivalry. Although they are brought together in their desires to end the hauntings, at times their polarity proves to impede their search. Christopher's dedication to the family name, in particular, is a major hurdle. His desire to suppress anything that might tarnish the family name is complicated by the realization that the reason for these hauntings is directly related to the deeds of their ancestors. The process of investigating the hauntings leads both brothers to ultimately question their identities and forces them to face the truths of their origins.
Probably the most interesting aspect of "Mean Spirits" is that it covers a time period of almost four hundred years. While it seems that such a timeline might be cumbersome and difficult to follow, Chiocchi carefully reveals the story of the Pennfields in small fragments that prove to be effective in maintaining suspense and interest throughout the novel.
Also interesting is Chiocchi's method of melding a fictional tale with factual events and authentic ghost hunting procedures. In doing this, he successfully gives the overall story an air of authenticity and realism that probably could not have been achieved otherwise.
Energetic and quickly paced, "Mean Spirits" proves to be a fascinating and haunting narrative that cleverly follows the legacy of a single American family. Those who appreciate tales of ghosts and the supernatural will find "Mean Spirits" to be an entertaining and enjoyable story.

The dominance of the New York Yacht Club, in possession of the America's Cup between 1851 and 1983, has given Newport, Rhode Island, the status of yachting capital of the world. Seven of the most respected America's Cup defenders were built in Bristol, Rhode Island. The state's contribution to racing yacht technology began in Bristol, when N.G. Herreshoff designed and built the Vigilant in 1893. The Goetz Custom Sailboat Company continues the Bristol tradition of building superior sailing vessels, many of which have been challengers for the coveted America's Cup, beginning with the America 3 in 1992. In his sixth volume for the Images of America series, author Richard V. Simpson explores the allure of the America's Cup yachts and racing through more than 200 images from his own diverse collection. The photographs focus on the beauty and dignity of the yachts, the genius of engineering minds, and the handiwork of skilled crafters. Within these pages, view a variety of rare images captured by turn-of-the-century biograph and stereoscopic cameras, and experience the majestic dance of the yachts as they jockey for position, from the starting gun to the crossing of the finish line.

I loved this book. It's a researcher's dream. I have done considerable investigation on soft drinks, particularly Mountain Dew and I use the works of both Chris and Dennis to find what drinks each bottler bottled and when.As an example, it was thru their work that I found the original non-Pepsi bottlers of the Dew. The book is well organized and easy to use. I can't wait for the other volumes, for the other states.
This book is not for everyone, however, if you collect softdrink bottles this book can act as your guide to their origins. This book and its subsiquent volumes will outlive us all. Thankfully, these guys have helped us preserve a valuable part of softdrink history for all time.NICE JOB!!!

Living In New England Review

Living In New England
Average Reviews:

I was browsing among the impoverished English-language section in a local bookstore and this immediately caught my eye with both title and jacket photo. I grew up and went to college in New England and it will always be called home-thus the nostalgia. This lovely and evocative book combines photography that you can drink in (and be transported by) with a very readable text...I find very often in "coffee-table" photo books the accompanying text is either boring or excessively esoteric. This is neither. Dos Santos' impeccable technical skill is obvious, although there is a slight bias toward a stereotypical New England simple-and-spartan ethic as far as subject choice goes. Overlook it and give this book a once-through. You won't regret it.

Just as New England served as the cradle of so much of American history, so, too, has the architecture of New England come to define the American idea of home. From the colonial farmhouse in the Rhode Island countryside to the shingle-style beach cottage on Martha's Vineyard or the simple saltbox on a village square in Massachusetts, New England has evolved a distinctive residential tradition that is quintessentially American. With purity, simplicity, and a respect for the past as its hallmarks, the style we associate with New England has again come to the forefront. Celebrating houses and interiors from Maine to Connecticut, Living in New England shows us the old and delights us with the new by introducing us to some of the area's most inventive and elegant interiors. Despite the rich traditions of the region, the houses showcased in this book do not rest on their laurels. Instead, their owners -- writers, artists, designers, publishers -- have created rooms that are informed by the regional vernacular but are freewheeling and up-to-date. New York Times columnist Elaine Louie has worked in close collaboration with the gifted photographer Sølvi dos Santos to locate some of the most beautiful, inventive, and memorable interiors throughout New England. And so this marvelous book gives us an exclusive tour of the Maine island where artist Jamie Wyeth lives and paints during the summer months, a compound that includes an antiques-filled home, a studio, and a live-in lighthouse at the mouth of the Penobscot Bay. We visit the Newport home of a grand family, its stunning interiors originally created in the nineteenth century in collaboration with Edith Wharton. We find a converted barn with a drop-dead view of the sea on Martha's Vineyard. And we stroll through the gardens created by interior designer Bunny Williams at her colonial farmhouse in northern Connecticut. Finally, this beautifully designed book closes with a location guide that allows us to explore the villages, towns, and countryside of New England.

Virginia's True Founder: Edward Maria Wingfield And His Times - Jamestown 400th Anniversary Edition Review

Virginia's True Founder: Edward Maria Wingfield And His Times - Jamestown 400th Anniversary Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is definitely the best-researched book in existence concerning the Jamestown Colony! You really get a sense of the events that caused the English to set out for the new world to begin with, and the terrible troubles that they endured after landing. It should be noted that in 1607, "Virginia" referred to all of North America claimed by the English, including much of Canada, so the book isn't just about some regional explorer, but rather the leader of England's hopes in all America.
Who knew that the first democratic election in the country that prides itself as the seat of democracy took place under British corporate rule? And who could name the first American President? Washington was the first president of the United States, but Wingfield was the first President of any kind elected here, over 400 years ago. Wingfield's name was sullied over the years by the accounts of a very bitter Captain John Smith, who was never again employed by the Virginia Company after some rather disastrous decision-making. If you want to read the other side of the story, this is it.
No doubt teachers & professors will find this book an invaluable tool in discussing America's beginnings as an English-speaking land. I thoroughly enjoyed it!!

When 57-year-old Edward Maria Wingfield first set foot in the soil of the New World, he was already a man who had seen a lot.He had been a lawyer, a commander of troops fighting the Imperial Spanish Army, a POW, and a Member of Parliament. He had become a fortifications expert in Ireland, and finally a businessman, helping to incorporate the first Virginia Company in 1606. But it wasn't until now, standing on the shores of this strange and hostile land in 1607, that the grizzled captain was to have his greatest adventure.
In a time when no English colony had ever succeeded overseas, 13 years before the Mayflower, something unprecedented happened. The newly-formed Jamestown council, selected by the company to run the colony's affairs, actually elected a leader to govern the 105 men, boys and all the land in this part of the world. With the warships of France and Spain patrolling the seas behind, myriad warring native tribes surrounding them, and not enough food to survive, their choice of a leader was critical. The man they chose - their President - was Edward Maria Wingfield. This is his story.
- Appendices include E. M. Wingfield's 1608 Discourse Of Virginia and the 1606 Virginia Company Charter.

American Architecture, Vol. 2: 1860-1976
Average Reviews:

I am in the process of reviewing textbooks for use in a general History of Architecture course. This book seems comprehensive, well-organized, and provides clear illustrations. For the price, it is a good value. Additionally, it will serve well as a textbook (alongside the other volume by the same title). I know of several other instructors who use these volumes and although their students respond that it isn't the best book - I recommend it for the price and the amount of material it covers. Vol. 1 - 1607-1860; Vol. 2 1860-1976. --- Specifically, I do not like: some of the chapter titles: (Vol. 2) specifically "Proud and Soaring Things". Also, there are no color images; although this is a small inconvenience (and again, the price makes up for this problem). Yet, as an instructor needing to make slides, it's helpful to have a color image with high resolution to make reproductions for use in class.

The Titanic Story: Hard Choices, Dangerous Decisions Review

The Titanic Story: Hard Choices, Dangerous Decisions
Average Reviews:

The most remarkable thing about this remarkable book is that, after all that has been written about the Titanic, someone has contributed a fresh perspective. Author Stephen Cox quiets the cacophony of finger-pointing moralizers, who so confidently distinguish heroes from villains in this tragedy, with his careful and thoughtful analysis of the ethical paradoxes associated with the event. This impartial treatment and the annotated bibliography are worth the price of admission. But the real treat is the drama of the Titanic Story. Intertwined with the factual descriptions are the excerpts from exciting eyewitness testimonies, taken primarily from the American and British inquiries after the disaster. Add to these the fascinating and poignant photographs of the people whose lives were destroyed by the Titanic, and you have a hell of a read. You will enjoy this book.
