(More customer reviews)Incredible photographs, certainly, and a remarkably poignant memoir! If you love jazz, photographer Herb Snitzer's book, "Glorious Days and Nights, A Jazz Memoir" is a `must'.
Full disclosure: Herb is a friend, I own a couple of his photos, and I've had the privilege of viewing parts of his portfolio over the years. I was prepared for the wonderful images in the book and those I saw on display recently at the Gallery Kayafas in Boston. The surprise was the narrative: poignant, intimate, thoughtful, insightful and in own Herb's voice.
Herb was fortunate to have had access to the jazz milieu at a time when one could get close to musicians both professionally (the book's jacket photo of the piano keys reflected in Thelonious Monk's glasses) and personally (his amusing tale of being `whupped' in a ping-pong match with the artist at the home of an heiress). Like many in my generation, I was introduced to jazz in the 50's and 60's via recordings including "Jazz Goes to College", "Kind of Blue", "Giant Steps", "No Sun In Venice", and was able to experience many of the artists live, in intimate settings. For me, Herb's visual and narrative 'back stories' of the performers, his personal friendships with them, their performances and the times, are a delightful return and wonderful augmentation of my musical youth. For those who have recently (or relatively recently?) become fans of jazz, this memoir will be an insightful insider's view of an era that has sadly passed and/or a valuable addition to the music you have collected.
