A gripping story of real characters whose lives are intertwined through shared childhoods, new beginnings, and the quest for a meaningful life. Issues of family, religion, politics, and values surround each character and the decisions that lead them to each step they take in life. You can really imagine what life was life in the steel-town of Pittsburgh at the time as well as the reason people heed the call to the serenity of the desert southwest. Used bookstore owners and lovers alike will be compelled by the mysteries they can both shroud and reveal. And a great purple cover to boot!

One fall night in 1941, in a small town down-river from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, a foreman from a textile plant was killed. Daniel Sloan finds his youth is in disarray when his idealistic stepbrother, Aaron, is arrested for the clubbing. The only witness who could possibly shed light on what actually happened is his girl friend, Beverly. When she vanishes the Sloan family organizes a search for her whereabouts. Forty-plus years later the mysteries surrounding the killing and the witness disappearance are about to end. Daniel, now 56, and Beverly, revisit the characters, events, and horrors to unravel the realities that had haunted their lives throughout the years. The search for the truth, the search for the witness, and her cleverness in staying undercover, take both characters along separate circuitous paths, through numerous personal relationships and many frightening close calls, eventually coming together with long sought answers in a little used bookstore in Espanola, New Mexico.
