This book simplifies a lot of the message about the Underground Railroad, its origins and its methods. In fact, not enough information was given about the clever ways that people were helped to freedom.
The book is a biography of Levi Coffin, and it goes into graphic detail about his memories of the mistreatment of slaves. You need to be ready for your child to read about a man being beaten with a burning log, about another man who is chained and then has his hand held to a hot blacksmith's anvil and beaten with a hammer until he submits, as well as the more typical (for this age range) information about families being separated and enslavement being wrong. Also, Levi's wife has an extramarital affair, which is specifically mentioned in the book.
This book leaves out the material that would be interesting for children at this reading level (how the underground railroad works) and offers too much that is above their maturity level.
Parents need to pre-read this. Second and third graders can decode all the words (and the illustrations are interesting at this reading level), but the subject matter is geared toward 6th grade or higher.
