(More customer reviews)Writings about the revolution in recent years have been dominated by biographies of the most famous founders, neglecting not only the not-so-famous, but the masses of the American people. It is a pleasure, therefore, to find a new book that focuses on the common people, and of five major cities at that. Carp does not single out individuals so much as urban people in the mass, but he does it well by dividing the cities into "cultural landscapes" that themselves influenced how people thought and behaved. This is truly original, and thank goodness it is readable rather than drily academic. I recommend it to all.
