The Prince of Sin City offers not only an entertaining story, but a fascinating walk through history as well. Mob connections in Chicago, New York, and Vegas are common knowledge (and the stuff of many an engaging novel or movie) but few realize that Newport, Kentucky (just across the river from Cincinnati) was once a thriving hub of underground intrigue as well. Walton's novel combines an accidental Sam Spade-style character, who is a down on his luck (professionally, though not romantically) journalist who gets caught up in the action as it unfolds, revealing a few decades of the seedier happenings in the area. There is a manuscript, a story, and everybody seems to want it - badly enough to kill for it. What is the story that no one wants repeated? More than attachment to the character, the desire to uncover this forgotten history keeps the reader turning the pages. The pictures in the back also give the reminder that this is more than just a story -- this is history. Fictionalized, yes; embellished, probably; but a reminder of an historical past where all of the answers are not apparent or on the surface.
