"Beggarman, Spy" is a tremendous read on its own but even moreso if you're fortunate enough to have read Chacko & Kulcsar's earlier two Israel Potter books, "Gone Over" and "The Brimstone Papers".
I had the same feeling after reading each book..."I'm sorry to leave this character and his amazing life."
The books are well researched and very well written. I've been an enthusiast of colonial/revolutionary history for most of my life and have read volumes but there were details in these books that really help the reader understand what it was like to be an "ordinary" soldier or sailor in America's fight for Independence. It's a view of history one rarely gets.
The first two books, "Gone Over" and "The Brimstone Papers" are works of fiction that I found riveting. "Beggarman, Spy" is an excellent historical narrative that separates fact from fiction and gives one an in-depth understanding of the "real" Israel Potter.
I highly recommend all three of these books and my suggestion would be to read them in the order they were written. They will provide a great deal of enjoyment, adventure and excellent historical perspective on many of the people who sacrificed so much to win our Independence.

The biography of Israel Potter created a sensation when it was first published. Potter's tale was so strange and compelling that Herman Melville later made it his own in fiction. But no one has ever known Potter's true-life tale, which was hidden for more than two hundred years. Beggarman, Spy brings the truth out of the shadows of history with grace and vengeance. It makes a great adventure into an even greater story.
