(More customer reviews)During an anniversary weekend in Newport, Rhode Island, my husband became fascinated with the Newport Tower, which stood on the same block as our bed & breakfast. After tracking down as many books as he could about the origin of the landmark, he felt that this novel gave the most thoughtful summation of all the theories. I'm much less pragmatic. I say it's just great to curl up with a book that has such a solid sense of place and, while conveying skillfully researched history, it still contains characters you immediately care about. Like watching a good movie with good performances, it allows you to suspend belief, use your imagination and completely enjoy. I don't think you can ask more of any book or any author. If you want a good rainy day read, this is it.
