This isn't a bad book, exactly. Rather, it's derived entirely from the most shallow, easily accessible layer of open source material on the Internet. The author doesn't state anything that's outright incorrect, and does a pretty fair job of introducing the roles and assignments of today's American fleet (NOTE: If you are a newcomer to the subject, which there is no shame in, then this really may be an ideal buy. With the Kindle PC program the photographs are often gorgeous, and the subject matter will be comprehensible and exciting to someone who is encountering it for the first time). There are occasionally references to other nation's navies, and frankly, I find every aspect of the way that these forays are set up absolutely baffling. For example, a chapter dedicated to surface vessels spent about 2/3 of it's length in a digression regarding international frigate design (international here just means USN, then the Australians, the British, and occasionally another NATO member with a nominal military), but then abruptly drops the issue with no concluding or further reference, while glossing over the cruisers, desroyers, etc. that the chapter claimed to be discussing at the outset. In short, I don't feel ripped off, this wasn't highway robbery, but if you have the slightest preexisting knowledge base in this field, you will find nothing new here, and frankly, while it may not have felt like a robbery, it sure didn't feel much better either.

Since World War II, the nature of sea battles, and of warships, has changed dramatically, reflecting profound changes in the world at large. This book offers a close-up look at what these changes entail, and how they have come into play in regional conflicts in Southeast Asia, in escalating naval hostilities between the Soviet Bloc and the West, and in skirmishes and major engagements in our day. Here are the warships of the Korean conflict, and the larger Cold War that paralyzed much of the world for forty-six years; here are the vertical takeoff and landing aircraft, which, coupled with the new, smaller aircraft carrier, allowed for a nimbler, more flexible force that could respond to the political brushfires of recent years; and here is the aircraft carrier of the twenty-first century, a military city on the sea.

With detailed pictures and text, Modern Warships tracks the role of warships in a world of increasingly littoral naval conflict, where small nations can possess increasingly advanced technology and super-power dominance has declined. An invaluable resource for the military and naval historian, with many images appearing for the first time, the book offers a unique vantage point on today's maritime affairs.
