I usually choose to read historical fiction romance and rarely stray to more contemporary eras, however this book was recommended and from the first page I was captured. I was captured by the writing style of this author. EVERY sentence is full. Every sentence draws you into an intense experience that this character is living. I enjoyed the ride!!! I hope the next book is as captivating. This story covered most of lifes emotions; humor, disappointment, mistakes, regrets, joy, love, loss. I recommend it.

Stingray : The Lethal Tactics of the Sole Survivor Review

Stingray : The Lethal Tactics of the Sole Survivor
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
To read this sort of stuff, you really have to be a "Survivor" junkie, and I qualify. I have been with it since the start and don't believe I have missed an episode (though some were eminently missable!).
"The Stingray" came out hoping to capitalize on first "Survivor" winner Richard Hatch's instant fame. The author's big beef is 1) CBS has Survivor cast members so locked up, it's a wonder they can even renew their drivers' license and 2) Richard Hatch "strung him along" and a $500,000 book deal sunk from sight because Richard either was unaware of the lock CBS had on him or thought he could get around it.
Mr. Lance never considers that maybe Richard Hatch was also bummed out about losing $500,000. The book is basically one long whine. Lance constantly reminds us he is a multiple award winning "investigative journalist" and Hatch is well---chopped liver. Richard is a fascinating subject, a man that has reinvented himself more times than you can count, very bright, self-destructive, and some of this information is presented.
Awards aside, this book is atrociously edited and hardly a page goes by without major typos and misspellings. The organization is non-existent. Mr. Lance is much given to "More on THIS later" type statements, only there never is any "more." The author constantly zings Hatch with "you knew how to win a million dollars; but you didn't know what to do after you got it."
Well, now it is two years later. Richard seems to be doing ok, and he has been resurrected as the Prime Survivor. All other Survivors are compared to Richard and found lacking. Latest Survivor winner Brian Haydik, who could probably give a whole new meaning to the phrase "coldly ambitious", is believed to have modeled his strategy on Hatch's game. At the time of Richard's win, he was the man you loved to hate, and Peter Lance sneered that would be his undoing. Not necessarily so. Viewers gradually realized you could be Charley-nice-guy and get booted off the island, or you could Outwit, Outplay, and Out Mean everyone else and come home with a million dollars.
Many of the interviews in this book are second-hand, even at the time the book was printed. I gave the book a second star for the occasional insights into Hatch's character. Otherwise, a waste of time.

Located at the very heart of the Crystal Coast in Carteret County, Beaufort represents the best of the old days and the old ways of historic North Carolina. Seeking a natural, deep-water harbor, settlers in the early 1700s chose the site of the former Coree Indian village named Cwarioc, or "fish town," and upon this land, developed a home that would become rich in maritime heritage. Brimming with stories of pirates and privateers, suitors and soldiers, merchants and fishermen, this memorable village attracts thousands of tourists and newcomers each year, eager to explore its charming waterfront shops and streets lined with elegant residences. This unique volume takes readers on a remarkable journey across Beaufort's 300-year history, bringing to life the generations of men and women who shaped the town's personality and guaranteed its longevity through their hard work and perseverance along its coastal waters. Touching upon the major events that played a role in the town's evolution, Beaufort, North Carolina chronicles the life of the colonists under the direction of the Lord's Proprietors, their participation in the revolt against English rule and the following conflicts such as the War of 1812 and the Civil War, which brought the terrors of battle into their backwaters, and the commercial and technological changes of the twentieth century that fashioned the Beaufort of today.

I have lived in CA for the last 20 years. With this book I have found and explored many places that I had never heard of before. The information is very useful and easy to understand. I am unsure what the other reviewers "political" issues with this book were but I did not have the same experience. This book lives in my car in case we find ourselves on an impulse trip and need more information. I even bought a copy for my parents and they raved about it as well.

Rediscovering Vinland: Evidence of Ancient Viking Presence in America Review

Rediscovering Vinland: Evidence of Ancient Viking Presence in America
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Fred Brown has done his homework. I wish his editor had done as well. His arguments regarding the Viking voyages have the solid feel of someone who had walked the land and sailed the seas in question. I think. I say that I think this is so because he jumps all over the place both geographically and temporally. The many digressions tend to lend credence to his arguments, but they also introduce doubts as to his judgment. (Really, what has the fact that Roger Williams may have seen his mentor burned at the stake to do with the Viking voyages?)
Brown calls his small boat the Wave Cleaver meant to symbolize his cutting through the legends to the truth. Well, the reader will need his own cleaver to get to the meat of the argument.

For over 100 years, people have debated where Vinland is located. Thisbook describes what sagas said, where Vikings landed, what interactionthey had with Natives, and what legacy they left Indians and earlyEuropean colonists. Fred Brown uses 33 years of studying Viking accountsof journeys to America, genetic information, archaeological evidence, OldNorse language remnants, and sailing experience to pinpoint yet anotherViking incursion in New England. His detective work to find Vinland isbrilliant and masterful.

"While you and I play golf, Fred Brown spends his off-hours researchingour past. After reading about possible areas visited by the Vikings anddescriptions of America in Viking legends, in 1976 Fred ventured out byboat using Viking descriptions and archaeological finds in that theorizedarea. He investigated documents from English settlers in the 1600s aboutthe light-skinned Indians, metal and smelting use by early Indians, oddlinguistic similarities to northwestern Europeans, and a peculiar resistanceto tuberculosis among Indians, genetically common to Europeans. Heconcluded, and is not the only researcher to do so, that the Narragansettand Wampanoag Indians of the region encountered by early Englishsettlers were, in fact, descendants of mixed Indian/Viking populations."—Editor, Diane Holloway, Ph.D.

Small Surrenders Review

Porter and Thomas won my heart and the surprise ending almost broke it! References to Atlanta landmarks and the University of Virginia were familiar territory and made the characters that more real to me. It was an inspiring story of courage and forgiveness with emotional twists and turns that left me hanging! I thoroughly enjoyed this first work by Dorothy Houser and will be looking forward to her next one.

Determined to get accepted into Harvard, Porter Miller decides to begin her freshman studies at the University of Virginia and then apply for a transfer. Thinking that she can switch programs once she arrives on campus, she enrolls in nursing school merely as a formality. To Porter's surprise, she learns that she must continue in the nursing school for her first semester.
While working at the medical center one evening, Porter tends to Thomas Lancaster, a cancer patient at the university hospital. Thomas's kindness and down-to-earth ways captivate her, and the two become romantically involved. But in the course of her relationship with Thomas, Porter makes a startling discovery about her family—one that could sever her relationship with Thomas forever.
Small Surrenders focuses on the rippling effects of moral turpitude and how past mistakes can resurface to ruin two entire families. But it is also a story of faith, forgiveness, and survival as Porter works through the aftermath of her devastating discovery.

This is a great book! It's just a shame that they forgot to mention The Barnstead Inn in Manchester Center! It is located in the center of town and sits back from the road just enough to help you forget that you are anywhere near town. Like I said the book is great! But do yourself a favor and do not miss this true piece of Vermont. The trips in the book are great and I have taken several of them!

If you are a collector of Clarice Cliff or 20th century ceramics, this resource can serve you well. Leonard Griffin, a Cliff expert, reviews Ms. Cliff's life and the flower theme in her work. This book is for collectors, one who finds interest in this remarkable artist who became the developer of the Bizarre line. Mr. Griffin's writings would also appeal to those who study the art deco periods.

By 1930 Clarice Cliff had become the Potteries first woman designer, famous for her "Bizarre" ware, her amazing Art Deco ceramics and, in the 1930s, her floral designs, which formed the bulk of her sales - such as her much-loved "Crocus" design. Reproducing original colour transparencies, and drawing on Clarice's observations on her garden from letters written to a lifelong friend, this book explores her lifelong love of flowers and its impact on her work, showing how many of her designs - her stylized "Applique" and "Latona" florals, her "Marguerite" ware of 1931 or her 1934 "My Garden" - were inspired by that love and were later to be echoed in the flowers in her garden. It includes an A-Z directory of her floral designs, and valuations on a variety of Clarice Cliff shapes based on Christie's prices.--This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

The New York Times Guide to Unforgettable Weekends Review

The New York Times Guide to Unforgettable Weekends
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book could have been a rescue tube in this heavily urbanized east coast. It puts out pretty nice collection of things you can do in weekends, places you can go and experience you can have. I'm pretty outgoing and am aware of "secret gems" in this area but I still found few more gems like Hot Ballooning in CT, renting a boat (no licenses req) for week long journey through Erie Canal and winter language classes at Mohonk Mountain House. I also found helpful trip reports for Block Island and Mystic Seaport which I was looking for quite a while. But beyond this, the book is pretty much unusable. The book is organized as series of very descriptive long long long trip reports. So unless you are willing to sit down and patiently read these 400 pages of trip reports, you won't know if you should choose this or that. The editor or whoever decided layout of book simply didn't used common sense. How a typical reader like me would use this book? I would typically open this book on Friday night and want to have a look at a table listing places and attributes such as cost, travel time, best season, outdoor activities, attractions, required reservations, etc. Then I would choose couple of places from this table, read their 20 lines max trip report, have a look at 3-4 photos, choose one place and just go. Right? It's common sense. Instead, this book has a long long glorifying travel essays as if they are competing for some literary prize. There are no summaries. Forget that, there are NO PHOTOS!! So unless you read the whole thing start to finish, you won't have slightest idea whether should you go there or there. At times even after reading whole thing you would be still confused which place to pick because each trip author tends to glorify their trip so much (even if it's just Newport or Newark)! Bummer. I think the book could have been cut down in 1/4 of size which would have increased its usability by factor of 10.

Wet Dreams Review

Wet Dreams
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Untie the dock lines, cast off and jump aboard Douglas Danielson's book, entitled, "Wet Dreams," also the name of a posh 70 foot Hatteras yacht adorned with babes and booze, partying just off the coast of L.A. at Catalina Island. The reader's voyage will take one upon turbulent waters of a young lady missing from her "filthy rich" daddy, as Jake Mortensen and Buddy Wright seek to find out the answers to the questions of her whereabouts. Along the way, the story tacks against the wind as Buddy receives a death threat from what seems to be an ex-Vietnam-vet. Station a cop character at the bow with a memorable name, Virgil Klean. Add the undercurrent of Jake's attractive and explosive exotic Chinese-American girlfriend, Toey Wong, losing her cool doubting her relationship unjustifiably. What you get is a mystery novel of extraordinary entertainment buoyancy floating in your mind. Remembering, as some of the characters are also true surfers, all landlubbing matters cease when the awesome curls are breaking and "surf's up."
Stuffed with vernacular from the boating world, Douglas Danielson writes in a very relaxed, conversational style, as if you were having lunch with him at a Yacht Club and he was telling you the story first hand. His depth of knowledge about the intricacies of sea-fearing vessels, and his familiarity with the lifestyle and people that command the wheelhouse and sleep in its staterooms, goes fathoms beyond what might be known to an average reader. The skill of Doug Danielson's writing is demonstrated when he takes this information, which is of keen interest to him, and makes it easily assimilated and definitely very enjoyable to others as well. His book takes a steady course building on some of his interesting characters from his earlier work, Shore Loser, however Wet Dreams stands on its own sea-legs as being a ship-shape novel.
The years of experiences and knowledge Doug Danielson has amassed in the boating industry shines through in his work, giving his characters a rather wise and expert analytical quality. Knowing more about boating details then assumably any reader, he respects the intelligence of his audience by filling in the sentence structures to become very educational. In essence, I've learned quite a bit about yachting from reading the descriptions Douglas Danielson wonderfully entwines within his story. Aside from boating lingo, his use of scene structure is also quite admirable, enabling an uncanny efficiency in descriptions resulting in the reader's clear imaging.
"Wet Dreams" would make a great movie. The picturesque settings of luxury yachts, the scantily clad sun-tanned eye candy characters, and the casual shorts and T-shirt lifestyle of Jake and Buddy no doubt would be enjoyable viewing. Also, filming just off the coast of L.A. would be fun for the cast & crew. The only detail I see would possibly need to change is the title from "Wet Dreams," as people might get the wrong idea when driving past the marquee of the movie theatre, not knowing it's just the name of a yacht. At least on the cover of the book is a photo of a surfer ripping through the pipe being chased by an avalanche wave, as any surfer knows, dream waves, Wet Dreams.

Mauch's Sailboat Guide, Vol. I Review

Mauch's Sailboat Guide, Vol. I
Average Reviews:

I finally broke down and bought all 3 volumes...it's aninvestment, but if you are thinking about spending many times that ona boat it's a wise purchase. It saves lots of time calling brokers only to find out that the boat you thought you were interested in is not a serious candidate. There are some shortcommings, some of the drawings (fortunately only a few of the many)are apparently reproductions of old sales literature and as such have been copied so many times prior to printing that they are illegible; I would love more info, like how many were hulls were built; comments on general quality, etc. On any reprints I would hope they consolidate all 3 volumes into one with a single table of contents, the current arrangement has you going from volume to volume for data on boats from a single manufacturer. All that aside, these are great reference books and I hope Ms. Mauch keeps adding more info on her listings from existing owners or other broker's files, as well as adding more manufacturer and model listings in future printings. Finding any significant information on older boats is a mysterious and frustrating process, these 3 volumes (which are really 3 parts of what could, and probably should, be one book) are a gold mine of essential information if you're shopping for a used boat. Now if Ms. Mauch were to put these on a CD for computer access and offer it as a companion to the books that would really be great, then we could zoom in on the drawings... END

Nathanael G. Herreshoff was the greatest marine designer and builder this country has ever produced. He is credited with the introduction of more new devices in boat design than any other man, and the great yachts that he created for the successful defense of the America's Cup caught the imagination of the entire world.
