New England Furniture at Winterthur: Queen Anne and Chippendale Periods (Winterthur Book) Review

New England Furniture at Winterthur: Queen Anne and Chippendale Periods (Winterthur Book)
Average Reviews:

For lovers of period furniture, this large book is like pressing your face against the candy store window. The Winterthur collection is the legacy of Henry Dupont. For those who haven't made the journey to Delaware, the Winterthur museum is the premier collection of colonial and early American furniture in existence. This exhaustive book focuses on the New England furniture, among the best in the collection. Each of the 225 pieces is shown in a photograph, often with several images of details. Unfortunately, the photographs are all in black and white (except the dust jacket). An average of 2-3 pages of text accompanies each piece. For the student of furniture design or the lover of fine furniture, this book is a treasure.

New England (Lonely Planet New England) Review

New England (Lonely Planet New England)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have the 2008 edition of this guide book. As a lonely planet guidebook, it is not very good. As a guidebook in general, it is not the worst.
I have frequently used lonely planet guides in the past when traveling and have generally liked them but this one is lacking. As several other reviewers have mentioned, the hotels, places and even towns mentioned are predictable. Also, unlike most lonely planet guides, this one is not geared to the budget traveler or backpacker at all unless you consider a hotel around $150 to be "budget". Certainly, the writers could have done more research to seek out unique places to stay. If I wanted a travel book written for my parents, I would buy Frommers. This is practically the same thing. This book is good if you are driving through somewhere for a few hours and need a place (restaurant/pub) to stop and don't know the town at all. For instance, it pointed us to an excellent pub with lots of microbreweries in Portland, Maine that we otherwise would not have found since we were just passing through. But any guide should be able to do the same thing. Overall, the writing does not add much general insight to the regions being reviewed nor does it point out many unusual finds or destinations. You don't get the sense that the writer really explored the region.

Stanford White's New York Review

Stanford White's New York
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The book business is really weird. Hundreds of people who know nothing -- the authors of those Chicken Soup and diet books come to mind -- write books that leap out of the bookstores. And scholars who spend years learning about fascinating subjects end up being the 1,456,657th best seller on Amazon.com. I was browsing in my library when I came across this retrospective of Stanford White's work and life in New York. It's a magnificent book, lovingly and intelligently written; the kind of book you can read once a year and continue to enjoy. Anybody who loves history, particularly the history of NYCity should try to get this book. The pictures are terrific. The authors should be proud of themselves.

Pink and White Tyranny: A Society Novel Review

Pink and White Tyranny: A Society Novel

A funny, marvelous tale of an empty-headed, gold digging girl and the unfortunate man she marries. Try to find an edition with the original ink drawings, which add much to the period flavor. Those familiar with Stowe only from Uncle Tom's Cabin will be amazed by her talent as a light humorist.

Captain John Smith: Jamestown and the Birth of the American Dream Review

Captain John Smith: Jamestown and the Birth of the American Dream
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I read "Captain John Smith" after reading Price's "Love & Hate in Jamestown". Both books I enjoyed tremendously. What I liked about Captain John Smith, and one could have presumed this by the difference in titles, is that it educates the reader about Smith's life before Jamestown. I was amazed by his encounters with the Turks and shortly thereafter his escape from slavery. We also learn about the relationships Smith built and skills he acquired before boarding the Susan Constant. Smith's adventures before Jamestown give him much more credibility as a leader once he arrives in the New World.
As a side note do NOT watch the movie The New World. It will cloud your mind with inaccuracies. I thought the movie was poor enough to turn off part way through.

O'Hara's Choice Review

O'Hara's Choice
Average Reviews:

Don't bother buying this book unless you feel you must read Uris' last book. Surprised to see it on the half-price table, I bought it from curiosity and finished it out of loyalty, having read 'Battle Cry' in the '50s and almost all his subsequent books. This book has almost no military action, an almost melodramatic plot, and (worst of all for me) the dialog sounds like people speaking in modern times. Having served with the Marine Corps, I found some of the sentiments and attitudes hoaky and the romance between the two main characters (this being a clash of strong wills) was wooden. You'd do better with Ayn Rand. Shortly after starting the book, I noticed that Uris died this year; I'm betting his secretary and a sophomore American Lit major finished it for him. This is a sad way to cap a fine career, one that brought me enjoyment most of my adult life.

Making E-Business Work : A Guide to Software Testing in the Internet Age Review

Making E-Business Work : A Guide to Software Testing in the Internet Age
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book does not contain any useful information for software test professionals. It is little more than a whitepaper that takes a ten-thousand foot view of web testing and why it should be done, with lightweight examples.
However, this book does highlight activities and milestones that are essential to deploying web-based solutuions. From this point of view it does have value for managers and PMs who are responsible for making a business case for web-based projects.
For professional testers I recommend either Testing Applications on the Web by Hung Quoc Nguyen or Client Server Testing on the Desktop and Web by Daniel J. Mosley.
For project sponsors and project managers this book would nicely augment Web Project Management: Delivering Successful Commercial Web Sites by Ashley Friedlein.

Hidden Treasures: Searching for Masterpieces of American Furniture Review

Hidden Treasures: Searching for Masterpieces of American Furniture
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It isn't often that one describes a book like Hidden Treasures as a "can't put down" type of tome, but that accurately describes the sense one gets while reading this account of how two talented men, twin brothers Leigh Keno and Leslie Keno, achieved their successes in the world of antiques and collectibles. Each twin contributes his own sense of style to an easy-to-read narrative of their humble beginnings, touching on assorted "finds" and friendships that contributed to their present day status as respected authorities in the world of antiques. From the beginning chapter by Leslie Keno, describing events which will lead to the auction sale of a wonderful and extremely rare Townsend secretary, through accounts of assorted searches, penned by Leslie and brother Leigh, to the final chapter, which describes the secretary's fate at auction, the Brothers Keno take us all over America and parts of Europe in their searches for hidden treasures. It doesn't take an antique collector to appreciate good writing and a fascinating subject, especially when it includes a fair number of beautiful photos. Hidden Treasures, by Leigh Keno and Leslie Keno, with Joan Barzilay Freund, is destined to become a favorite page-turner.

Breaking Blue Review

Breaking Blue
Average Reviews:

I just discovered 'Timothy Egan'. That he has done extensive research is obvious. I first read "Lasso the Wind", a history lesson of the Pacific Northwest. I grew up here and there is much that I had never even heard of, I admit I am hooked. I will ALWAYS read anything I can find by Mr. Egan. When finishing "Lasso the Wind" I immediately went looking for anything else I could find by Mr. Egan. I found "Breaking Blue". It is fascinating! What one live sheriff did for a murdered sheriff, a police officer and detective did to a sheriff, and how the Spokane Police Chief handled it . . . It is a compelling read. You won't be disappointed but you will probably be astounded. People are the same all over. If you checked out Seattle, Chicago, New York etc. you will most certainly find "The good, the bad and the ugly". If you like Mysteries you will like this, if you like True Crime you will like this. If you just plain enjoy good reading, you will like this. I don't see how you could go wrong with Mr. Timothy Egan.

Making Use of the Census (Public Record Office Readers Guide) (Readers Guides) Review

Making Use of the Census (Public Record Office Readers Guide) (Readers Guides)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This introductory book is primary focused on the use of the census microfilm available for England and Wales at the Public Records Office in the United Kingdom.
However, the information provide is of great use to the researcher with English or Welsh ancestry for understanding how the censuses were taken, how they are currently organized, and how best to access them.
The section on "Finding Your Place on the Film" describes the PRO's microfilm numbering system which is useful even when you use the films at the LDS Family History Centers since they are copies of the PRO films. Understanding the PRO reference numbers makes research a great deal easier.
The section on "Understanding the Returns" contains many wonderful gems from the original enumerators' notes. Be prepared to laugh at their inventiveness in describing some occupations and the reasons why they were unable to count everyone in their area. Humorous and insightful examples are used to illustrate the book throughout.
One set of illustrations which I found particularly helpful were the sample street maps showing how an enumerator might "walk" the street - thus explaining the order in which households were recorded in the census returns.
The appendixes include a complete list of registration districts and their numbers for each census and various street index finding aids (invaluable for hunting ancestors in the larger cities).

Edge was very good. Michael Cadnum is excellent at describing his characters in the story. The plot is well thought out and you never know what the main character is going to do next. He mainly describes the main character but still does a really good job on the rest. He makes the story interesting and makes and fun to read, even though it has some dry and dull moments the exiteing ones make up for it.

S.S. United States: Fastest Ship in the World Review

S.S. United States: Fastest Ship in the World
Average Reviews:

A very thorough book on an icon of United States maritime history to add to any collection. There is a lot of information that you don't find in other books written on the ship. It focuses anywhere from the planning put into the ship, the glory years, and the sad final voyages. The book is well written, with the forward by Susan Gibbs, daughter of the genius naval architect that designed the ship. The book is mostly written information, but still contains many photos. I believe is was originally published to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the SS United States, which still sits laid up in Philadelphia.

A Single Man, Good Fortune (Must Want Wife): American Pride and Prejudice: Book One
Average Reviews:

Ok, clearly Jan Austen is banking on a fan base for Jane Austen but nothing could be further from the original. I love Pride and Prejudice, and have read several of the rewrites on sequals. So far this is the worst and most disturbing. Really lots of disturbing sex scenes, and just rambling of people's messed up heads. This book made me mad that I had wasted my time and my money.

Has anything changed since Romeo and Juliet, Madame Bovary, Anna Karenina, The Great Gatsby, Darwin, Freud and Sartre?

The men are from West Hollywood, Massachusetts, Manhattan, and Michigan; the women are from Newport, Rhode Island. Jan Austen reports, cut by thrust and parry, on the Great Game--sexual politics--played as a fabled New England family declines and falls.

Book One in this quartet, A Single Man, Good Fortune (Must Want Wife), is the story of Mathew and Zola Bennet-Towne--the scion and the siren.

I bought a 1963 Chris Craft Corsair and wanted to find what model the boat was. This book had my boat and also the over 700 other models produced from the beggining to the late 1970's. I was very impressed with the detail of each listing, including how many hulls built and a photo of each model. This work is a detailed and almost astounding reference work for Chris Craft and antique boat enthusiasts and will not disappoint.

Footprint Cardiff (Footprint - Pocket Guides) Review

Footprint Cardiff (Footprint - Pocket Guides)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I had already purchased several useful guides on Wales, The Rough Guide to Wales and Wales by The Lonely Planet, both had their strongpoints, are larger versus this handy pocket size. I wanted more detail on Cardiff so I purchase this next. This pocket size guide has something I value a lot; more internet websites listing for hotels, other places of interest, with a succinct description. Naturally, it has a more expansive list of places to stay, dine, with price range coding. Also suggestions on what to sight see, as one would expect. It is well organized and also has information on the surrounding South Wales area. It has a short chronology of the history of the area. Nice city section and area maps are in the final pages. Limited black and white photos are interspersed in this guide, more would have delighted. This guide had information on local golf with websites. I am an avid golfer and have other golf guides that cover that topic, but did not have some of these included.

Jamestown: Journey Back in Time Review

Jamestown: Journey Back in Time
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Roanoke Times says, "Jamestown: Journey Back in Time" is a fun and engaging read. Other readers comment that the story seems so real they feel they are actually walking along with Johnnie, the main character. I think what is most endearing about this book is that Johnnie is a kid who basically has a lot but doesn't really appreciate it. Through a bizarre accident he ends up back in Jamestown. There he learns many lessons about the time and himself. He also finds himself working for Captain John Smith, who teaches Johnnie more than just navigation. The story moves along pretty quickly and there are several plot complications to keep the reader engaged. There are no real "dead spots" because too much is going on in Johnnie's life. It is a coming of age story that should have wide appeal.
