This is an awful reproduction or photocopy of the original text. Nabu Press never should have allowed this copy of the original text go to print. About 1/3 to one-half of the pages are unreadable. They warn the purchaser that there may be some problems with the text, but this is more than some small imperfections resulting from the photocopy process. This is an unreadable text, and the publisher should be ashamed of it, and Amazon.com should not sell the book. This is the worst purchase I've ever made.

A Circle of Two: Book of Newport Review

A Circle of Two: Book of Newport

This book starts out pretty quickly. The introduction to the characters is well written; however it can be a little confusing. The book is mostly about two best friends that find an old scrapbook of poetry, that one of their grandmothers left them. The plot thickens when the two girls discover that the poems in the book are in fact magic spells. Overall the book was very interesting and well written. I will enjoy reading the sequel to this story!
Enjoy,

The Branch Davidians of Waco: The History and Beliefs of an Apocalyptic Sect Review

The Branch Davidians of Waco: The History and Beliefs of an Apocalyptic Sect
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you are looking for one complete study of the events leading up to the deadly fire of April 19, 1993, then this is the book you want to read. It reviews the founding of the Davidian sect, the breaking down into the various branches still with us today, and carefully tracks the development of Branch Davidian theology from its roots in the Seventh Day Adventist sect into the last days and hours of the siege itself. Despite the lack of written material available to researchers, there are dozens of audio tapes recorded during Bible studies led by David Koresh as well as interviews with many people who heard him speak, including survivors of the fire. The amount of material the writer worked through in creating this book is daunting, to say the least, and lends a great deal of credence to his conclusion.
By the time you read the last page, the writer will have convinced you that the fire at Mt. Carmel was all but inevitable. The only real question was when it would occur, not if it would occur. Due in no small part to inexcusable mistakes by the B.A.T.F.E (A.T.F. at the time of the fire) and the failure of the F.B.I. Hostage Rescue Team to bring in the appropriate expertise, the fire occurred much sooner than it needed to and probably took far more lives than it would have in different circumstances. However, hindsight is always 20/20 while foresight is blind, which is something this book makes abundantly apparent. In this case, as in many such cases, asking "what if" is not only foolish, it leads into useless speculation. A far better question is "why", and that is the question this book answers in crystal clarity.

The Newport Serial Killer Review

The Newport Serial Killer
Average Reviews:

I have never read this author before, and surely won't again. I'm sure it's easy for me to be an armchair critic, having never written a novel myself. But I sure have read zillions of 'em. This one is sorely lacking. Its prose leaves a lot to be desired--the conversations between the characters are boring and not realistic at all. And of course, the outcome is so predictable! It has taken me weeks to finish because I couldn't bear to pick it up again once I put it down. All I can say is, boring, boring, boring. Good book to read at bedtime! But I'm sure Mr. Huston is laughing all the way to the bank.

The Newport Serial Killer relates the tale of a grisly series of murders which take place in Newport, Rhode Island. There are no clues as Police Lieutenant Clayhill and his partner, Sergeant Souza, struggle to discover and apprehend the brutal murderer of three young women, each murder taking place on a national holiday. Many leads and many interrogations lead nowhere until finally a confession is received. The confessed killer, Lloyd Krubick, is quickly tried, convicted and sentenced to a life term in prison, where in a short time he is killed by other prisoners. While all is now calm in Newport, murders start happening in Miami, Florida, which are hauntingly similar to those in Newport. Could this be a copycat killer? Or was Krubick's confession false and has the real Newport killer moved south? Clayhill and Souza go to Miami to solve the mystery.

The White Bones of Truth Review

The White Bones of Truth
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Cris Newport's second novel is an insightful and realistic look into the lives of four individuals who want to change their world. From the political activist, Phoenix, and the dual-gendered outcast, Corlay Llewellyn we are treated to a view of the world from the outside of the power structure. As they struggle to find ways to make their lives meaningful and give something back to those who have helped them while protesting the corrupt Studio system, they face the toughest challenges of their lives.
But perhaps more frightening is the insider's view of Screen City -- a.k.a. Hollywood. Michelle David's experiences as an actress "owned" by her studio are much closer to the truth of today's industry than many of us realize and it is her story which polarizes the other characters and propells them into action.
This book is fantastic, a must-read exploration of what it means to have freedom and what price fame really exacts from film stars. If you think it's all easy money and star-studded parties, Michelle David's studio-required prostitution will certainly open your eyes. Like many contemporary public figures, especially movie, television and musical stars, Michelle's life is circumscribed by what the studio "allows" her to do. They dictate everything from where she's allowed to do her foodshopping to where she's allowed to live and who she's allowed to associate with. And if you think this isn't happening now -- you're wrong.
Cast in opposition to Michelle's story is the story of JayJay and the Bandshees, an up and coming band of rock 'n' roll musicians on the verge of making it big. JayJay is hesitant to sign a Contract that has similar earmarks to Michelle's, but the other bandmembers, eager to escape their poverty, are more than willing to take the chance.
Set in the not-so-distant future, this novel is a moving story that will haunt you long after you've finished the last page.

Sparks Might Fly: A Novel Review

Sparks Might Fly: A Novel

I've read a lot of first novels and usually they're okay, but not outstanding. This one, however, is definitely the exception. Sparks Might Fly is a deceptively simple novel -- at least on the surface. But there's so much more going on below the surface. Newport has incredible insight into the act and art of creativity and what happens when it is lost.
I would recommend this book to anyone.

I worked for McDonnell on Gemini and for Boeing on Apollo (too young for Mercury), so I naturally read every space history book I can get my hands on. This was definitely one of the best I have ever read.
I usually wind up with a list of technical and/or historical errors whenever I read space history books, but I only noticed a few typos in "Lost Spacecraft".
For someone who was not personally involved in Mercury, Mr. Newport certainly did an excellent job of describing how all the capsule systems worked.
I especially enjoyed the photos, most of which I had never seen before.
This book is worth 10 stars.

This was a rather frightening, yet hysterical, trip down memory lane. So much has happened in American politics over the past 20 years. What a blessing it is to have the Capitol Steps around as the bards recording the inane antics of our elected representatives. To prove how great this book is, I've bought three copies of it - one for me and two for other friends. They are phenomenal. Here's to 20 more years of political satire!

This book includes a fascinating look at Newport's sordid history and includes vintage photographs of many of the former clubs and casinos. The accompanying captions relate interesting tidbits about the people and places that made Newport the Sin City of the south.
It begins in the Prohibition era and details the city's decline throughout the years. It also shows how the citizens fought to reclaim their city and how they helped transform it into a thriving, bustling, hot bed of development that has become the envy of the region.

Located in Northern Kentucky, Newport is a small, historic river town bustling with business in a respectful and developing community. While it is now known for its charm, Newport once had a dark and sinister past known as its Â"Sin City years.Â" Newport earned its reputation for vice, crime, political corruption, bootlegging, casinos, brothels, and bookie joints early in the cityÂ's history. During the Civil War, soldiers stationed at the Newport Barracks were offered entertainment from various saloons and bordellos located in the city. At the turn of the 20th century, John Thompson, a Newport native, invented the Thompson Machine Gun. The Â"tommy gunÂ" was made infamous by gangsters during Prohibition. Citizens of Newport, fed up with the cityÂ's sordid reputation, eventually banded together to drive out the vice and reclaim their city. After a long struggle, Newport is now a pleasant and enchanting community.

Polling Matters: Why Leaders Must Listen to the Wisdom of the People Review

Polling Matters: Why Leaders Must Listen to the Wisdom of the People
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a fascinating book for me simply because the author nails so many aspects of polls, squarely on the head, especially those polls where the person being asked questions may be to uneducated, uninformed and is actually answering questions based on what they have heard about other poll results, thus a mob rule mentality. The methodology of how he does polls and how others do polls was intriguing. Alas I remember the adage opinion ... everyone has one.... but how was it formed and does it have real value? Having been polled on a few times I wondered how the questions were chosen and worried when answering them that there was a lot of grey area and few questions actually had a yes or no or one size fits all answer.

I thought Reaper's Inc. - Brigit's Cross was fantastic, but the sequel, Reaper's Inc. - Rogue Reaper is astounding! Every page evokes an emotional response and keeps the reader glued to the story. B.L. Newport has a flair of writing that makes the action jump off of the page where the reader can see the action. Great read. There aren't enough stars to rate this one. Mozart and the Whale: An Asperger's Love Story Review

Mozart and the Whale: An Asperger's Love Story
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Asperger's syndrome is one of the many branches on the gnarled and crooked tree called autism. People with AS tend to be highly intelligent or creative or both, but socially inept to an extreme (and, as this book shows, sometimes hilarious) degree. Some of them, like Jerry Newport, are savants who have the ability to calculate numbers and dates. Some, like Jerry's wife Mary, have prodigious artistic talents.
Jerry met Mary at a party for adults with AS organized by Jerry's Los Angeles-based group, AGUA (Adults Gathering, United and Autistic). He had attempted to fashion a whale costume expressing his adoration of Free Willy, and she arrived in the guise of Nannerl Mozart, the brilliant musician whose life was overshadowed by her famous brother. It wasn't exactly love at first sight, but when the two realized they both kept pet cockatiels it was sealed. A scant 20 weeks later they were married, both of them experiencing an exciting sense of being fully understood and intimately acceptable that had eluded them previously.
The book is written in tandem --- first Jerry speaks, then Mary, in episodes. It can become a little confusing even for the avid reader, because of its many time jumps and some repetitions. But if you were fascinated by the movie Rainman (as Jerry was, finding in it his first real affirmation), then you will want to take in the whole saga of Mary and Jerry.
Both had miserable childhoods filled with basic misunderstandings about how the world works and major rejections by family and peers. Of the two, Mary had "lived" most. Shunted away by her parents to a strict religious cult in mid-adolescence, she had two children and many lovers, lived in caves and deserts and the streets of San Francisco. Her only successful employment was as a piano tuner. A tall attractive woman with outbursts of extroversion, she admits that having AS isn't as difficult for a woman (it's also much rarer) because snagging ordinary men isn't the same problem for autistic women as getting normal women is for autistic men.
In college, Jerry once overheard his frat brothers talking about his remarkably high incidence of first dates. He usually could charm a woman sufficient to go out for coffee but soon found her interest waning, after which he might call her numerous times without success. He had no idea what ordinary people talk about, and little empathy for the feelings of others. He once had sex with a young woman and, immediately after the act, sincerely grilled her for ways to land a date with another girl he'd been trying to meet.
Despite his education, Jerry wound up driving a cab and living in desperate loneliness. Starting AGUA was a step out of the pit. Finding Mary was a relief and a learning experience.
In marriage much of the anger that the two had left unexplored came out --- at each other. Jerry had no problems expressing it, which caused his wife to fall into deeper and more crushing depressions. Having a "60 Minutes" show focus on their unusual relationship only added salt to the wounds. How they conquered their demons and learned to live with AS and each other is an adventure worth telling.

"Reprint" is extremely misleading for this item. Rather, it was a very poor less-than-xerox level black and white copy of each page of the Yearbook with print or photographs near the inside binder of the original smudged, illegible or missing entirely. Also, the copy scale is approx. 75%, rather than 100%, so the photos are smaller and, with the lack of clarity, sometimes difficult to make out. I am very disappointed in this purchase.
